Mirror and Miracle share the Latin root mirare, to wonder at.
Mirrors derive their symbolic importance from the ancient belief that
people were magically linked to their reflections.
At one time, mirrors were objects of illusion and mystery; they
celebrated reflection and beauty. Appearing in mythology and poetry,
mirrors have symbolized vanity and self-absorption as well as representing
the human soul and the virtue of self-knowledge. Until the nineteenth
century mirrors were precious objects, rare and difficult to make.
As such, they were highly treasured, and passed on from generation
to generation.
Our mirrors pick up the thread of this tradition. The quality of
the glass itself is an essential element of our mirrors. The glass
may be cast and polished by hand, and mirrors are hand silvered
in our shop. We design the mirror and frame in concert, so that
both are integral to the finished piece.
